Staff Sgt. Sarah Brown in Afghanistan

Even though she’s a writer by trade, Staff Sgt. Sarah Brown has found that some things are best said through pictures.

That’s why she posts a mix of photos and articles on her personal blog, Daily Gingerbread, about her second deployment to Afghanistan. She’s currently serving as a Public Affairs Airman for the NATO Training Mission Afghanistan.

On the blog, she records her life in Kabul, sharing her experiences with the Afghan people in a war environment while supporting NATO forces as they train the Afghan military.

“This is a land of vast differences,” she wrote recently. “Rugged terrain and tenuous beauty, all surrounding a fragile hope for the future. We came to make it a better palce for the people who live here, to give them a sense of the world around them and let them know that there is more to life than just survival, that with hard work and determination (and maybe a bit of luck) anything is truly possible.”

The military forces serving in country have my blessings and my gratitude for going over and putting their lives in danger for our freedom. I am former military and I know exactly what it is like to be over there, away from you family and missing your normal way of life. Keep doing what you are doing and come back home safe. Praying for you quick and safe return.

Sportz Monkey I was in the UK and watched the coast gaurd there go out on a hover craft to save a girl who had got stuck in the sands when the tide was out, it started to come back in and they had to go save her before she drowned. they got her out in the nick of time. Good people who do this they are volunteers risking there lives for some one else. Thanks To all of them around the globe.

It is great effort as said by previous commentator. I think who saves life is like God. We have to also thank the technology, Hovercraft which makes it happen.

Photographic journalism from the viewpoint of the soldier on the ground is as candid as it comes.  The home-front is in debt to soldiers like
Staff Sgt. Sarah Brown, in profound ways, too many to count.

Great to see some photos from the front line, you’ve got to be brave having a camera in your hand instead of a weapon when you are out in places like that.

Thank you for your service to our country, Sarah…and for your efforts in helping change the hearts and minds of the people of Afghanistan.

What has been the most remarkable thing you’ve seen through your camera lens?Best, Don Roberts

Sarah you are a testament to your country. I find it outrageous how people so quickly forget the hard work and dedication that our military put in around the world and your photographs are a great way of bringing it all back home.
Thank you for your work and bravery.

These pictures are really good Sarah. I agree that too many people simply forget our guys and girls are out fighting for us every day and your pictures are a stark reminder that they should be appreciated more.
Please keep up the great work and post further pictures if you get the opportunity.

Fantastic photos!  What a story each one conveys!  Keep up the great work!

  • Doesn’t matter!

Great job guys of losing the RQ-170 Sentinal UAV to one of our enemies. Why won’t you just mail them the blue prints and the technical manuals while you’re at it.

    GO NAVY!

Just to inform the uninformed: these are not Hungarian children but Hungarian Gypsey children.

  • M Boros H

While the photograph is a great shot, the woman with child is also a Gypsey woman and her child. The photographer should make it clear that her subjects are not Hungarians to avoid misconceptions.

They did almost as good of a job as the navy when they lost that MQ-8B Fire Scout over washington back in 2010 :X  Maybe next time it experiences a “software anomaly” over washington obama can fish it out of his pool and mail it back.
